The results are finally in regarding 2012 traffic fatalities across the United States, and the results are not good. Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have released a complete data report stating that 2012 was a deadly year. There were more than 33,561 deaths in 2012 alone, which was 1, 082 more than the previous year. Sadly, the majority of the increase deaths were motorcyclists and pedestrians and a large number of those accidents involved drivers that were driving under the influence of alcohol.

Other key statistics from the released data report include:

  • Pedestrian fatalities increased for the third straight year, marking a 6.4% increase.

  • Majority of pedestrian fatalities occurred in urban areas, at non-intersections, and at night

  • Motorcycle rider fatalities increased for the third consecutive year – a 7.1% increase.

  • 10x as many riders died due to not wearing helmets.

  • Large-truck occupant fatalities increased for the third straight year, marking an 8.9% increase.

  • Drunk driving fatalities increased 4.6% and the majority involved drivers with BAC levels of 0.15 or higher.

  • Nearly 2/3 of the nighttime fatalities involved vehicle occupants who were not wearing their seatbelts.

In Colorado, however, the overall drunk driving traffic fatalities declined by 27 people. In Westminster, there were 9 fatal accidents in 2012 and 9 fatalities. 5 of those accidents were alcohol related fatalities.

Traffic fatalities continue to be a problem throughout Colorado and the United States and alcohol related accidents are not on the decline. When the unimaginable happens, do you know what to do and where to turn?
